- Ambassadeur in Kroatië
Ambassador Berends joined the foreign service after studying history at Leiden and Moscow universities. She has been Ambassador in Kinshasa, Permanent Representative in Strasbourg and Consul General in Cape Town. While based in The Hague she was responsible, amongst others, for then Yugoslavia and later Bosnia and Hercegovina and Macedonia. Her other postings were Moscow, Hanoi and Kiev.
Ellen Berends is married to Nicolaas Vergunst, a curator, artist and writer. Her hobbies include art, literature, horse riding and – naturally – travelling: “I am, once again, on the first row of history in Zagreb. I advise my government on opportunities and risks, assist Dutch business to enter the Croatian market and support Dutchmen who have encountered problems. As a diplomat, I always try to make a difference”.
