- Consul-generaal in Duitsland
Ellen Berends joined the Dutch Foreign Service after studying history at Leiden and Moscow universities. She served previously as Ambassador in Zagreb and Kinshasa, as Permanent Representative in Strasbourg and as Consul-General in Cape Town. While based in The Hague she was responsible for Eastern Europe and Southern Africa. Her other postings were Moscow, Hanoi and Kiev.
Ellen is married to Nicolaas Vergunst, a curator, artist and writer. Her hobbies include art, literature, horse riding and – naturally – travelling: “I am, once again, in the first row of history in Düsseldorf. I represent my government, advise on opportunities and risks and assist Dutch business. As a diplomat, I always try to make the difference”.
