Maryem van den Heuvel door Charles Michel gekozen als Hoofdadviseur Buitenlands Beleid bij Europese Raad

De nieuwe voorzitter van de Europese Raad, Charles Michel, heeft onze Nederlandse ambassadeur in België, Maryem van den Heuvel, gekozen als Hoofdadviseur Buitenlands Beleid. Van harte gefeliciteerd! De Belgische oud-premier, die 1 december Donald Tusk opvolgt, heeft zijn besluit vanochtend aan de pers bekendgemaakt:

Maryem van den Heuvel is a senior member of the Dutch diplomatic service. She is currently ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Belgium, and served previously in The Hague as managing director for the Americas and as deputy director for human rights, good governance and humanitarian assistance. She has been seconded both to the European Commission and to the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, where her work included UN affairs, counterterrorism, transatlantic relations, human rights. She was also a member of the secretariat of the Convention on the Future of Europe and served at the permanent representation of the Netherlands to the EU as external action coordinator. Earlier in her career she was posted to the Embassy of the Netherlands in Paris and worked in the department for Africa and the Middle East.

Maryem van den Heuvel: “President elect Michel has been clear, most recently in his speech last Monday at the University of Amsterdam that ‘the European Union has a central and defining role to play in the world.’  We are facing many challenges in a world that is rapidly changing. I strongly believe that we need to step up our efforts to work together and act effectively to promote our interests and values globally.
